Health Commission approves project to release drug Atazanavir

This medicine is used in the treatment of people with HIV and AIDS . Its distribution and sale is patented to an American company.

After a long debate, the Health Commission chaired by Congressman César Vásquez , through a majority vote, approved Bill 275/2016-CR, which proposes to declare the Atazanavir drug , used by patients and patients with HIV / AIDS , in the public interest.

Although in Peru its distribution is free, the cost for the state to acquire it is 19 soles each, the most expensive in Latin America. And this is because in our country, for almost 8 years, its sale is patented to the US company Bristol Myers Squibb.
After its tight approval in the Health Commission -Fuerza Popular abstained from voting-, the Project will be debated in the Congress Plenary and, if approved, would terminate the monopoly of the distributing company.
The tablet could be sold by several companies at a lower price, which would save the state for almost 30 million soles per year.
In Peru, 66,776 people carry the HIV virus.
